Write an establish on the following passage from A Midsummer darkness’s Dream. You should give consideration to such matters as:
a) How the stage relates to the rest of the play (be c arful not just to evidence the story);
b) The distinctive features of the language; and
c) the performance possibilities of the extract
The following essay realises a focal point of A Midsummer Night’s Dream with titania’s realisation that she has been in sack out with the Ass; Bottom. This description could be said to be correct, two in dress and behaviour, precisely ironically it is Oberon, Titania’s true love, who is perhaps as the actual Ass. Issues of power, control, class, hierarchy, masculinity, feminine authority, trade union and sexuality are all played out at bottom this scene. The essence of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, both in the tradition of Elizabethan times and as Shakespeare’s tool for the exploration of parallel realities of the path to true love, are felt keenly within this passage. Filled with both ocular and literary comedy, atypical of this early Shakespeare play, the reader is taken on a journey through the emotions of the fairy King and Queen.
Whilst level-headed humour and sharp wit make for an entertaining passage, darker themes of punish and regret emerge through deeper reading.
The iambic pentameter elevating Titania’s language together with the use of assonance and sibilance in “ tricky smooth head” contribute to her fawning and flattery of Bottom, but could also be viewed as quite a disconsolate opening to the passage. Louis Montrose comments, she is “benign and sinister, imperious and enthralled”[1]. It may be said that as well as the comedy of Titania cooing after an Ass, the sounds conveyed in the language also makes us tonicity uneasy about the exchange.
