The Union government has modified the eligibility criteria for the Bharat Ratna, paving the bureau for sports persons like the late hockey legend Dhyan Chand to be conferred the countrys highest noncombatant accolade.
Sports Minister Ajay Maken said his ministry had requested the Prime Ministers Office and the space Ministry to modify the eligibility criteria. The award earlier was given to individuals excelling in handle of art, literature, science and public service but now it can be conferred for performance of highest ordering in any issue of human endeavour.
Maken said that Dhyan Chand and batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar were the top contenders for the award.
