Snake Scent Application Behavior As Seen in Two Different Squirrel Species
Introduction: In lab, we aimed to learn nigh the techniques employ in observing and documenting animal behavioral patterns. Animals often generation perform certain actions, and then repeat those actions which create species circumstantial behavior (Life acquisition Core, 2011). During this experiment, we are exploring the actions of 2 different species. It is fundamental to compare snake scent application patterns between ii different squirrel species to see if SSA is a type of species specific behavior. My conjecture is that the squirrels apply the snake pare down scent to particular split of their system in a specific organized pattern, and that SSA is not random. Therefore, the null hypothesis is that the behavior is random. My prediction, formed due to my sign observation, is that squirrels predominantly apply the snake skin to certain part of their bodies based on their preferencess.
Methods: We watched videos of SSA behavior from two species of ground squirrel, calcium ground (Spermophilus beecheyi) and rock squirrels (Spermophilus variegatus). A researcher had previously restore up an experiment with snakeskin left out for squirrels, and recorded the videos (Life Science Core, 2011). Each video represented a different psyche squirrel.



While watching the videos of eight individual squirrels, we tallied the amount of times the snake scent was applied to several parts of the body (head, flank, tail, front legs, & hind legs) and created tables recording the frequencies for both species. Because I worked with a partner who observed the videos as I tallied, she used time to also determine frequency. For example, she personally determined if the squirrel despicable its tail for more than a few seconds counted as two or more tallies.
