He is hanging around in a tav ern with measly class people acquiring drunk. King Henry is very disappointed in Hals behavior and wishes he was not his intelligence. King Henry says, Of my unaged Harry. O, that it could be proved/ That some night-tripping fairy had exchanged/In cradle clothes our children where they lay, /And called mine Percy, his Plantagenet! /Then would I persuade his Harry, and he mine (1.1.. 85-89). What he is saying is that he wishes that his son was or more like the character Hotspur, who is a very noble person. However, Hal claims that he hangs around with the common people and behaves in inappropriate ways, so that people can have hapless expectations of him. It is early in the play where Hal is trying to prove that he is worthy of the crown. At the end of 1.2, Hal admits that he his purpose neary compete inappropriately and hanging around with criminals and thieves in order for people to perceive him this way. Moreover, when the time is right, he will become the superior that his father and others want him to be.
