Pension expense is part of a companys pay plan for an employees advantage just like allowance and commissions. When General Motors Corp. modified its pension benefits, it affected the amortization of anterior service cost. The prior service cost is the aggregate of increase or decrease derived from recalculating the benefits of a pension plan. This cost is accounted for in the balance sheet as part of store other comprehensive income (AOCI). Somemultiplication this amount is positive, other times it is negative. If this amount is positive and increases the Projected Benefit Obligation (PBO), it is a prior service cost. If it is negative and reduces the PBO it is a negative prior service cost.

When GM states that its unfunded pension bargain and pension expense are expected to be unfavourably impacted as a result of the recently unblemished labor negotiations, the company means that it incurred a net loss in its AOCI. This increases the expense on the company therefore resulting in an unfavorable result. This would then affect Mr. Rubins earnings by 22 cents per share so the company can regain the $170 million charge that was incurred from the retirement negotiations.
